  • From Stockhausen to Esaias Järnegard

    From Stockhausen to Esaias Järnegard

German post-war modernist music rests largely on two heavy pillars: Helmut Lachenmann’s harsh, historic gaze on the one hand, and Karlheinz Stockhausen’s growing – over the years – cosmic sounds.

In the evening’s programme, we’ll hear their music and learn how they caused multiple echoes – from Billone’s ritual outbursts to Simone Movio’s hyper-precise notes.

  • From Croft to Grisey

    From Croft to Grisey

In 2018 – 2019, Gageego! goes out hunting for contemporary links, the starting point being composers that the ensemble has longed to perform for a long time and favourite composers.

Based on these Gageego! icons, the ensemble has searched, traced and sniffed out (googled!) its way to the different composers’ respective influence on the world of music and later composers. Seek and you will find, listen and you will dream…

Grisey’s Vortex Temporum is the central piece with its whirling sounds and arpeggios, but is given a new light here by the two young composers John Croft, from New Zealand, and Irish Ann Cleare, who take the legacy of spectral music into a new era of tonal and spatially explorative music. The chains become long lines and brittle whispers – harshly beautiful.

    Programme

    John Croft Trio (Seirenes III)
Ann Cleare I Should Live in Wires for Leaving You Behind
    Gérard Grisey Vortex Temporum

We’re in the middle of rehearsals for Sunday’s Jerusalem-themed concert, but have to take a short break to share this peculiar sound. What on earth can it be?

  • The Man Hanged

    The Man Hanged

A visual, perhaps disturbing, performance, based on the modern classic Eight Songs for a Mad King, with music by Peter Maxwell Davies and libretto by Randolph Stow.

This production, made specially for the Halland Opera & Vocal Festival, features barytone Joa Helgesson, who most recently starred in the title role in the highly acclaimed Gothenburg production of Phantom of the Opera.

The main character is King George III, ruler of Great Britain 1760 – 1820. George has reoccurring episodes of mental illness, suffering from hallucinations while being painfully aware of his failing condition. During his first periods of madness, he is treated with torture, starvation and bloodletting. He is kept in a stable, treated like an animal. These methods, not uncommon for its day, have, not surprisingly, a deteriorating effect for the royal patient.

In this rendition of Eight Songs for a Mad King, the ensemble brings a new level of reality by incorporating Body Suspension into the performance.   Hooks, pierced through the performers’ skin, will allow them to levitate, while the biophysical instrument Xth Sense picks up bodily noises and transforming them to electroacoustic music.

Joa Helgesson and the ensemble use these stage devices to create a very visual and corporal representation of the “extreme physical and mental impact” that composer Peter Maxwell Davies calls for.

On stage we meet Doctor Anna who teaches us about the biology of pain in the lecture The Story of a Body Named George, opera singer Joa Helgesson, the fakirs from Santa Sangre Body Rituals and dancer Shannon Taylor. The piece is co-performed by Gageego! – ensemble for new music.

    Photos from halfway

he concert series Sounds of Conflicts has reached the halfway point. The remaining concerts will take place in spring of 2018.

Here we have some pictures from the latest clashes at the Gothenburg Concert Hall.

What we see above is Gageego! on life and death, from the concert Sounds of Conflicts: Moscow. Here Elena Rykova’s 101% mind uploading is performed with our musicians Jonas Larsson, Johanna Persson and the temporary doctor for the day, Paul Bothén. The operation was successful, but unfortunately the grand piano did not survive.

Before each concert, we have composers visiting. Here, Esaias Järnegard first talks with Gageego!’s Johanna Persson and then with the Russian composer Alexander Khubeev.

Anders Jonhäll and Ragnar Arnberg amazed the audience with both shadow play and total blowout in Bramputapsel #2 by Vladimir Gorlinsky.
